I think it’s really cool how in the story of the tower of babel, the people tried to use their own efforts and wisdom to construct a building to reach God, because now we can see the problems with that, such as a physical building would end up in space before it could reach “heaven,” resulting in the deaths of everyone climbing up. Also, it has never been by our own efforts that we could reach God, we’re not good enough -morally, intellectually, or in physical strength.
The very best those people could have done would have led to their own destruction. So in His mercy, God put their construction to a stop and took unity away from the people of that time, scattering them and splitting their one language into many.
Then, at the Pentecost, God gives His Holy Spirit. Pouring it out on the earth- reaching us, He calls us back to unity with each other and Himself. He did so by restoring the confused languages and giving us His love for each other. He did all of this not relying on our strength or ingenuity, but on His own plan, set up from before time.
